About Neil
I'm glad you're here. I'm Neil, a physician leader, entrepreneur and executive coach.
I came to coaching after a career as a physician executive in major health plans including Kaiser Permanente, Blue Shield of California and Health Net. I was responsible for quality of care, managing large clients, translating regulation into policy, and partnering with large healthcare systems. I also ran several statewide medical training programs to help physician leaders excel in key responsibilities (such as implementing chronic disease programs and Electronic Medical Records). In those positions I worked closely with physicians growing into Medical Director roles to help them understand a language and perspective not familiar to most doctors. Many of my mentees have gone on to major roles in other organizations.
I have also started two companies – a consulting firm and a novel health care delivery system for high risk individuals – that have grown into substantial and profitable organizations. In those companies I played multiple roles and then hired and mentored individuals to take on significant positions as the companies grew.
Throughout my time in the organizational part of health care I also maintained a medical practice. One of my most important jobs as a primary care doctor was helping people develop healthier habits, such as improving their diet, becoming more active, adhering to their medication schedules or stopping smoking. Behavior change is really hard for most of us, and I put a lot of thought and effort into how to support people struggling to make significant changes. That work informs my coaching today.
I receive my formal coach training at the prestigious Hudson Institute of Coaching and continue to refine my coaching practice through professional relationships formed there.
I am also a Level 1 Certified squash coach through US Squash, and a former tennis instructor.
In my free time, you can find me in my garden, guiding architecture tours of downtown San Francisco, and spending time with family.
